The Numbers Game

Published by Steve Osborne at 4:20 pm under Writing Rules

When writing numbers in sentences (as opposed to columns, tables and equations), spell out numbers one through nine. Once you hit 10, start using numerals.

RIGHT: That cat had nine lives.
RIGHT: Unfortunately it needed 10.

There’s an exception, of course. When starting a sentence with a number, spell it out.

WRONG: 36 people received the award.
RIGHT: Thirty-six people received the award.

There’s an exception to this, too: When the number that begins the sentence refers to a year, use numerals.

WRONG: Two thousand six was our best year.
RIGHT: 2006 was our best year.

We certainly have an exceptional language.
