Tricky Tech Words

Published by Steve Osborne at 4:04 pm under Writing Rules

Some of our newest words are the most abused. I once saw “Web site” spelled three different ways in the same paragraph. Worse, that paragraph was on a professional Web site development company’s home page. Here’s what The Associated Press Stylebook says about three of our most commonly used tech words:

RIGHT: Web site (two words; the “W” is always capitalized)
WRONG: Website, website and web site

RIGHT: Internet (always capitalized)
WRONG: internet

RIGHT: e-mail (with a hyphen)
WRONG: email

Be professional – get these words right. But don’t get attached. Our language changes, always in the direction of ease. Not too many years from now (probably just as soon as you get used to spelling them correctly) you can bet the accepted usage will morph to “website,” “internet” and “email.” But not yet.
