Only One Space Between Sentences
One space between sentences – not two – has become the standard in business writing. Yes, I know: in typing class you were taught to insert two spaces (unless you’re young and learned to type on a computer rather than a typewriter). And yes, I also know that unless you’ve already made the change, whacking the space bar twice with your thumb after hitting the period or other end-of-sentence key is hard-wired into you, like breathing. But it’s now a rule and “two-spacers” will soon become dinosaurs.
Why the change? It’s a long story, but it has to do with the evolution from mono-spaced typewriter fonts to proportionally spaced computer fonts.
They say you can form a new habit by doing something a new way 17 times. Don’t count on it with this habit. Multiply 17 by 1,000 and you’ll have a closer estimate. It will drive you crazy. So brace yourself for the challenge … and please don’t hate me for suggesting it.
